Under the bonnet
Of course, what makes an AMG, well an AMG is the engine; The A 35 4MATIC is powered by a 1,991cc which makes 306Hp 5,800 rpm and 400Nm of torque at 3,000 – 4,000 rpm. The crankcase made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium which help to reduce the vehicle’s weight.
The M260 E20 DE LA engine employs a twin-scroll turbocharger which helps responsiveness at low engine speeds and provides consistent power at higher speeds. Mated to the engine is a 7-speed automatic AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission.
Power is sent to the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system which has a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear axles.
The A 35’s body
Based on the CLA, the A 35’s wheelbase measures in at 2,729 millimetres with short overhangs at the front and rear. What sets the A 35 apart from the regular CLA are the AMG radiator grille with twin louvres, the AMG Line front apron with flics on the air intakes, a front splitter and silver chrome trim elements.
The A 35 rides on 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, and the illuminated door sill panels with Mercedes-Benz lettering.
The interior of the A 35
The interior is pretty much similar as all in the A-Class family, however, the AMG version has a couple of distinctive features. Taking centre stage is the twin LCD screens, one for the instrument cluster and the MBUX system. Here, the interface takes on the AMG look and functions as well.
The A 35 comes standard with the MBUX multimedia system. It features a clear control structure and high-resolution 3D graphics. Most importantly the MBUX systems learns the users way of speech and can operate vehicle functions via voice commands.
Besides the onboard gadgetry, the A 35 is clad in man-made ARTICO (aka artificial cow) with DINAMICA microfibre in black with red contrasting topstitching, and the signature red seat belts.
Also new is the distinct AMG centre console with touchpad and additional switch for operating ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and manual transmission mode.
The A 35’s practicality
The Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan has a rear headroom of 944mm and a boot capacity of 420 litres. The boot features a wide opening of 950 mm and a diagonal of 462 mm between lock and lower edge of the rear window. This allows comfortable loading and unloading, even of larger luggage items.
The A 35’s chassis and driving dynamics
New in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, the A 35 comes with AMG DYNAMICS. The integrated dynamic handling control system extends the stabilising functions of ESP. During cornering, the braking system applies a light application of brakes in the rear inside wheel, which helps the A 35 steer around corners better.
Besides that, the A 35 has mechanical grip factored in as well; the front section of the body shell has been strengthened for precise turn-in ability and the toe and camber stability of the chassis components.
A so-called “shearing plate” – an aluminium plate underneath the engine – increases the torsional rigidity and bending resistance at the vehicle’s front end. Two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody also reduce torsion and increase the stiffness.
The Mercedes-AMG A 35 receives AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers, which allows the driver to switch between three different suspension configurations.
The spectrum ranges from comfort-focused to sporty. The system operates fully automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions.
