Flagship SUV, BMW X7, mirrors the luxury and comfort levels of the 7 Series saloon
Two new flagship BMW models were launched together in Malaysia, the first-ever X7 SUV and the updated sixth-generation 7 Series saloon.
At 5151mm long, the X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence is BMW’s largest and widest SUV. At the top of the X range, the X7 has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that produces 340bhp and 450Nm of torque and completes the 0-100/km sprint in 6.1 seconds. Unlike the BMW 740Le saloon, the X7 is not a hybrid so fuel consumption is a more thirsty 10.5km/L.
Power is channelled to all four wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The xDrive runs as a rear-wheel drive under usual road conditions but the intelligent all-wheel-drive system redistributes traction between all four tyres to maximise grip, agility and handling stability depending on road and weather conditions as they link up with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
The BMW X7 has two-axle air suspension to provide a more adaptable ride. The suspension is adjustable by up to 80 mm, with five different height settings. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel using an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. With the DSC system, the vehicle load registered by the air suspension sensors can also be factored into the brake force applied.
Ground clearance is adjustable by up to 40mm above and below the standard ride height. The X7 also has Executive Drive Pro to manage body control especially when cornering.
The X7 has BMW Personal CoPilot technologies – a package of safety features which include Parking Assistant Plus with automatic manoeuvring in and out of parallel parking spaces, along with Reversing Assistant to help manoeuvre out of a tight parking space.
Interior comforts include panoramic sunroof with LED sky lounge effect, and up to seven electronically adjustable seats depending on configuration, including as a six seater, five zone airconditioning, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with 16 loudspeakers and electric roller blinds for side windows. Another new feature is the Rear Entertainment Professional system: two infotainment touchscreen monitors for rear seat passengers. The ambient lighting options are set up in themes which can be paired with specific situations/functions.
Practical features include soft-closing doors, second-row seat positions controlled from the driver’s seat and split-folding rear seats, 325 litres of luggage space which can be maximised to 2120 litres by folding down the rear backrests.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Operating System 7.0 is installed with a fully digital, user-configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and equally large central Control Display with touchscreen and controlled through through the Control Display. The X7’s voice-controlled BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant understands natural speech, assists in driving-related functions and answers questions about the vehicle. The X7 also has BMW Gesture Control which now recognises and responds to seven different hand movements such as circling customer’s index finger clockwise to turn the volume up and swiping their hand to the right to reject a call.
BMW X7 is available in seven stunning colours: Mineral White, Black Sapphire, Artic Grey, Sophisto Grey, Phytonic Blue, Terra Brown and Vermont Bronze. The interior upholstery is available in perforated Black Leather Vernasca, Coffee Leather Vernasca (not available in the six-seater) and Cognac Leather Vernasca complete with Black dashboard, or Canberra Beige Leather Vernasca complete with Mokka dashboard.
