Next-generation Ford Ranger launched in six variants including top-of-the-range WildTrak at RM168,888
The next-generation Ford Ranger has launched in Malaysia. There are six variants, configured with various engine, transmission and 2WD and 4WD options. The high performance Ranger Raptor will debut later this year.
There are several updates to the all-new pick-up truck with some segment-first features include:
- new chassis and suspension
- redesigned cargo area
- increased track and wheelbase width (50mm wider and longer)
- improved approach and departure angles (front 30 degrees from 28.5, rear from 21 to 23 degrees)
- increased turning range
- repositioned rear suspension dampers for better ride comfort
- upgraded tech features for improved connectivity
Unchanged are the body shapes and dimensions, door and glass apertures. Also, the maximum water wading depth of 800mm at 7km/h.
As before, there are two diesel engine options. The Single Turbo that produces 177bhp and 405Nm of torque, paired with either six speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The Bi-Turbo produces 207bhp and 500Nm of torque and is with the 10-speed automatic. The Bi-Turbo engine has a by-pass system that enables the turbochargers to operate in series (at lower engine speeds for enhanced torque and responsiveness) or just the larger turbocharger, bypassing the smaller turbo, to deliver more power faster.
Drive modes, previously exclusive to the Ranger Raptor, are now available throughout the range. The modes adjust gearshift, throttle response, traction, stability controls and ABS to improve grip depending on surface conditions. The WildTrak comes with six drive modes:
- Normal
- Eco
- Tow/Haul
- Slippery (for on-road)
- Mud/Ruts (for off-road)
- Sand (for off-road)
The XL base to XLT Plus have four modes:
- Normal
- Eco
- Tow/Haul
- Slippery (for on-road)
The undercarriage has also been reinforced with laser-cut steel to provide better protection and structural integrity.
The Ranger has the latest crash protection features and advanced driver assistance technologies. The WildTrak now has Evasive Steer Assist, a segment-first. This helps drivers avoid potential forward collisions by helping drivers steer with less effort when a collision cannot be avoided by braking alone. The WildTrak also has Adaptive Cruise Control with a Stop-and-Go feature, Cross Traffic Alert and Reserve Brake Assist.
The Wildtrak and XLT Plus also have a new Post-Collision Braking system which applies the brakes after a collision to reduce the risk of secondary collisions. The Automated Emergency Braking in the Wildtrak and XLT Plus now has cyclist and pedestrian detection.
Tech-wise, the Ranger now has either a 10.1-inch or 12-inch touchscreen monitor centre stack, loaded with the latest version of Ford’s voice-activated Sync 4A communications and infotainment system. The portrait-mounted monitor displays navigation screens as well as menus for climate control and entertainment controls. The instrument panel is also fully digital. The WildTrak has a 360-degree camera linked to the screen. This all-round view makes it easier to see obstacles.
Other improvements to enable a more rugged, adventure lifestyle are:
- 50mm wider cargo area can now accommodate a sheet of plywood or a full-sized pallet
- new cargo management system for transporting items like timber and toolboxes more efficiently
- a system of ultra-strong spring loaded cleats that clip into rails bolted to each side of the cargo box to store items
- tailgate designed to double as a mobile work bench with an integrated ruler and clamp pockets
- a dedicated space under the bonnet under the bonnet for a second battery as an auxiliary power source
The XLT Plus and WildTrak have additional features such as
- wireless charging console
- plastic-moulded bedliner
- more tie-down points on strong steel tube rails
Exclusive to the WildTrak is a side step behind the rear wheel into the side of the bumper to make it easier to reach into the bed of the pick-up from the side.
There are two new colours for the Ford Ranger WildTrak – Sedona Orange and Luxe Yellow. Other colours available are Arctic White, Meteor Gray, Aluminium Metallic, Lightning Blue and Absolute Black. The standard warranty is five years but an extended warranty to seven years is available.
New aftersales and service packages include an extended service package with upfront payments for scheduled services for up to five years. The benefit of this is cost savings as the payments hedge against increased prices in future and can be built into the loan.
