New ultra-high performance tyres to meet demand from the growing performance SUV segment
The SUV segment has seen huge growth in the past five years, and with high-performance models such as the Porsche Macan coming into the market, the demand for ultra-high performance tyres in SUV sizes has been increasing as well. In response, Michelin has introduced the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV in Malaysia.
The new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV
As the name suggests, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV is an extension of the Pilot Sport 4 and 4s product lines. The high-performance SUV tyre was developed with input from manufacturers such as Maserati and Porsche.
Michelin has adapted the tyre to handle higher weights and centre of gravity SUVs generally have, while offering higher steering response, ride comfort and longevity. Like the PS4, the SUV features an improved asymmetrical tyre pattern that rigidifies the thread pattern and to optimise grip when cornering. The hybrid belt construction of aramid and nylon improves steering response.
TUV SUD
To pit its new SUV tyre against the competition, Michelin contracted independent testers TUV SUD to test the PS4 SUV against six of its leading competitors last August, fitted 235/60 R18 on an Audi Q5 2.0 TDI, it took 5.06 seconds quicker to complete the 1,050-metre long wet handling track than its competitors.
The same story goes with its braking capability, stopping 2.7 metres shorter than its competitors. In the wet, it does 4.9 metres shorter when new and 8.5 metres when worn. With consistent performance throughout its lifespan, the PS4 SUV is Michelin’s effort to reduct tyre consumption in the long run.
With the question of longevity, the PS4 SUV is able to last 13,000 KM more than its competitors. The test was also contracted by Michelin fitting the same size tyre on a Hyundai Santa Fe CRDi against six other brands. This is thanks to the rigid blocks on the tread pattern optimised for longevity and high-density casings for tyre robustness. However, it’s not designed for off-road use.
Price and availability
The new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV is now available at Tyreplus and all Michelin authorised dealers across the nation. It’s available in 39 sizes ranging from 17- to 23- inch starting from RM700 onwards. Rim protectors are available on all sizes.
