Chery Super Hybrid Battery Safety Challenge

Chery Malaysia conducts Chery Super Hybrid Battery Safety Challenge

Chery Malaysia held the inaugural Chery Super Hybrid Battery Safety Challenge in Malaysia to showcase the safety of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) battery. More than 100 attendees, comprising government officials and media representatives were present to witness the test process.

The battery in the Safety Challenge is the battery in both Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV and Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV. The high-temperature fire test consisted of a preheating phase followed by direct flame exposure of 1min 20secs.

A controlled fire, fuelled by petrol, was set in a metal vat. The battery lowered into the fire which reached temperature of over 1000ºC. Throughout the test, the temperature was monitored and the readings displayed on a screen.

During the test duration, the battery remained stable. There was no fire escalation, or uncontrolled deformation, successfully completing the challenge under extreme heat conditions.

The outdoor demonstration was in front of guests which included government officials and the media. They were able to view and record the battery’s condition before, during, and after the fire exposure.

The Battery Safety Challenge is Chery’s global battery safety programme. Under the programme, Chery subjects its battery systems to a wide range of extreme and real-world scenarios across multiple markets. This demonstration in Malaysia is one of various tests Chery has conducted around the world. Other tests include:

China

In China, Chery prompted a head-on collision and spiral rollover to validate battery stability under severe structural impact.

Indonesia

The battery pack was immersed in seawater for 53 hours. This was to test and demonstrate resistance to corrosion and electrical isolation in highly humid and saline conditions.

South Africa,

Chery conducted an offset frontal collision test at 50 km/h, showcasing protection against real-world crash scenarios.

Ecuador

In Ecuador, there was a multi-angle live-fire test. Six rounds of ammunition penetrated the battery pack. This was to prove its strength through its structural integrity under extreme and unconventional stress.

Middle East

In Qatar, the batteries were immersed for 48 hours in 60-degree Celsius seawater, as well as buried in scorching desert dunes in Kuwait for 48 hours. These showcased its performance under prolonged exposure to heat, humidity, and environmental pressure. The battery remained in operable condition, demonstrating high durability and environmental sealing

Mexico

Chery conducted a battery scraping test, assessing resistance to abrasion and underbody damage risks.

In addition to the safety challenge, Chery Malaysia also highlighted the strong safety credentials of its electrified lineup. The Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV has a Five-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with an all-time high score of 94.68 points. It was also award perfect scores in both Adult Occupant Protection and Safety Assist, making it the only
plug-in hybrid model to obtain a ‘double perfect score’.

Chery Malaysia’s extended battery warranty covers up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometres, and includes the battery power pack, drive motor, and vehicle control unit.
