Evolt Karting launches XR Go-Karting and XR Laser Tag at flagship venue in Selangor
What did you do today?
While some people got up at 5am and run a 5k before crawling in a jam to the office, I didn’t. The morning traffic congestion was long over as I drove along winding back roads from Petaling Jaya to Evolt in Kampung Subang
Evolt is an electric karting and virtual reality playground which started in Johor but has opened their flagship venue in Selangor. The Chief Executive Officer of Evolt is Weiron Tan, the Malaysian motorsports driver who has raced in the GT World Challenge Asia for Audi Sport Team Absolute and is the only driver from Malaysia to win an FIA-sanctioned race at the international level.
My job today was to experience two new virtual reality-powered activities – XR Go-Karting, the first-of-its-kind in Malaysia for immersive entertainment, and XR Laser Tag, at the invitation of Evolt. Both XR experiences are only available at the Selangor centre which also offers electric karting. It was hard day of sweat and toil but someone had to do it.
XR Go-Karting
This is fully immersive, multi-sensory electric go-karting . There are two kart sizes – Junior for those up at least 110cm and Max, above 130cm tall. Put on the XR headset and the go-kart circuit in a section of the underground carpark becomes a whimsical winter wonderland: a craggy snowy landscape where animated objects like dancing stars, crowns and other obstacles appear along the route. Drive through and collect power-ups in a combination of virtual reality and augmented reality in a go-kart with tinkling music.
It may have looked frosty but no XR on earth could distract from the tropical heat but the experience was divertingly kitsch, utterly charming and entertaining. The XR karting track is for young families to go at a gentle pace – enjoy the fantasy environment rather than set new lap times charging through Arendelle. There are two kart sizes so that parents can drive alongside their children and share the virtual reality experience.
XR Karting is starts from RM60 a session for the Junior karts and from RM70 a session for the Max karts. Each session is eight minutes. Discounted rates are available for three or more sessions. Evolt also has regular electric karting on this track without the XR headset.
XR Laser Tag
Evolt describes XR Laser Tag as a fast-paced, multiplayer experience set in a futuristic environment. Players step into a virtual battlefield where physical movement is mirrored in-game, engaging in dynamic player-versus-player combat that combines the thrill of gaming with the energy of live action.
What the description can’t convey is how genuinely immersive and thoroughly enjoyable XR Laser Tag is. The game arena is a large air-conditioned room with two weight-bearing pillars. That is until you put on the headset and it becomes a brightly-lit futuristic steel edifice in the sky with steel plate and steel grating floors, open gaps to oblivion in the floor and moving walls. Acrophobia, anyone?
The surroundings are visibly not natural. However, it’s easy to lose yourself in the game – every movement is echoed in real time. There is the usual team objective of scoring points by taking out your opponents but where it differs from conventional laser tag is the added animated elements like the moving walls and the appearance of floating blue cubes. Pass through the cube and get weapon upgrades, protective shields or life extensions to progress faster in the battle.
That a virtual reality environment could be so absorbing was a surprise. I lost my balance while crouching behind a wall then tried to use that wall to get up. I was laughing so hard at the absurdity that an enemy combatant crept up, knocked me out of the game and I had to go back to base to respawn.
XR Laser Tag is for two teams of up to ten. If there are less players, AI team members are added to make up the difference. They are indistinguishable from real-life players and no less lethal. In theory you could play on your own with an AI posse of nine against another entirely AI-generated enemy squad.
Evolt Electric Karting
No VR in this, just go-karting in state-of-the-art Sodi RSX2 high performance electric go-karts on a 600m, 24-turn course designed by Weiron himself.
Evolt is a professional-level indoor electric karting circuit and is an official Sodi World Series (SWS) track. The track features CIK/FIA certified purpose-built track barriers and special resin flooring for improved grip, and conforms to international safety standards. Evolt is rated Top Tier, by Cameron Das Racing. Competitive karting packages for Time Attack and Grand Prix are available as well as Day Passes which provides six hours of unlimited karting starting from RM349 for weekday sessions.
Electric karts accelerate faster and have more stable handling compared to petrol karts. In addition, they don’t produce exhaust fumes or generate heat so the circuit can be indoors enabling karting uninterrupted by the weather. Another plus point, the karts are silent so we didn’t need ear protection.
After the safety briefing, we got helmets then headed off to the karts. There were ten others on the circuit in the first session. I enjoyed myself over three sessions before deciding to call it a day.
Is it possible for work to be too much fun? You can find out at Evolt. There is a 30% discount on Evolt XR experiences with every karting session purchase until 30 April 2026. More information at evoltkarting.com or follow @evoltxr on social media
