2026 Proton X70 launched, now from RM107k

2026 Proton X70 updated with new engine and improved features – and now costs RM4000 less

The Proton X70 has a 2026 update and the entry-level model now costs RM4000 less despite a new engine, new and improved features and styling updates. The X70 Executive is the base model at RM106,800, RM4000 less than its predecessor.

We had a chance to drive it at Proton’s semi-high speed track in Shah Alam and our verdict is below. A list of the differences in the Proton X70 for 2026 is below.

Variants

There are now just two variants. The base model is now the Executive with Premium as the top-of-the range at RM119,800. Both are front-wheel, two-wheel drive. There’s no more Standard or Premium X variants nor AWD. Also, there’s no more sunroof in the X70. The full list of differences in features between the Executive and Premium is here.

Engine

The X70 now has the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with the seven-speed dual-clutch that is in the X50. Built at the Proton plant in Tanjung Malim, the four-cylinder replaces the 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged mill that was introduced in the X70 in 2022. Power and output are marginally higher. The new engine produces 181PS/178bhp and 290Nm of torque compared to 175bhp and 255Nm in the three-cylinder. This is an almost 14% increase in torque while fuel consumption has reduced by a significant 5.5 per cent at a claimed consumption of 6.9L/100km

Refinement

Then there are the refinements which may not visible but their effects are discernible. Starting with the toothed timing chain in the new engine, replacing the timing belt that was in the three-cylinder. Proton claims this makes the new engine 25.24 per cent quieter and more reliable than its predecessor. In addition, the overall Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) of the new engine is 4.5 per cent quieter than the industry average for engines.

Also improved is the suspension system. There is less lateral roll as well as low-to-mid frequency road noise. This combined with the reduction in NVH make the cabin quieter, improves passenger comfort, and reduces driver and passenger fatigue over long journeys.

The steering system has also been upgraded so the response to steering input feels more direct and connected.

The rest

The major exterior facelift was in 2024 when the front grille and headlight dimensions were changed along with some interior updates so there are no other upgrades in 2026. There are a few downgrades: the seats are no longer leather in the Premium. Both the Premium and Executive now have artificial leather. The Premium does get a Nappa leather steering wheel. It’s leatherette in the Executive.

There’s still no Bahasa Melayu option for “Hi Proton!” voice control nor the screen interface which is available in the X50. Advanced Driver Assistance System features are still only in the Premium. Full list of ADAS features below.

2026 Proton X70 First Impressions:

The first thing I noticed was how much quieter and smoother the new engine sounded. The old three-cylinder had an audible three cylinder whine especially outside of the car. When accelerating, the four-cylinder engine is pleasantly torquey although the DCT is slow to respond to initial accelerator input which could lead to some over-revving when moving off from a complete stop at traffic lights.

The super-smooth conditions of Proton’s semi-high speed track are not a realistic test for NVH or the new suspension system. Real road conditions are still needed but X70 cabin was quiet and handling felt stable and planted when taking the corners on the banked track at 100km/h. Weight shift was more evident during the slalom but the car still felt controlled although the steering felt dull from over-assistance. Ride quality has been improved but the X70 is a firmly in family SUV territory, not performance SUV.

Overall the X70 felt refined but three things I did not like and both relate to the gearbox interface which is also in the S70.

First was that changing gears which was not a smooth push through from gear to gear in a single motion. Instead the gear selector has to be pushed from drive to neutral then pushed again from neutral to reverse. It is the same when going from reverse to drive, each time stopping at neutral then pushing again to the next gear. The process is clunky and pointless, and not safe in an emergency.

Second is that the driver can’t engage the gears unless they have the seatbelt on. Again, another clunky and pointless hindrance when the driver wants to make a minor parking adjustment or there’s an emergency.

Third is that the driver can only see which gear they’re in by looking on the dashboard. There’s no indication on the gear surround and the gear knob only displays +/- with R at the top and N/D under the +/-. Drivers look at the gear lever when they put the car in and out of gear. Looking at the dashboard is counterintuitive because that is not where their hand is.
