BYD recall limited to vehicles sold in the China market, almost 100,000 vehicles affected
Official statement from Sime Darby Motors to Malaysia customers:
As the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors would like to reassure our valued customers that the BYD models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recent recall announcement by BYD in China as it is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the China market.
The announcement states, “BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. are recalling certain domestically produced Dolphin and Yuan PLUS electric vehicles.”
The batches and models recalled within the China mainland region do not pertain to markets outside of the China mainland region.
Sime Darby Malaysia issued the above statement following news reports that BYD Auto in China recalled nearly 97,000 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a manufacturing fault involving a steering control unit which could lead to fire risks. The market regulator, State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced news of the recall on Sept 29.
BYD Auto is recalling Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs manufactured in China between November 2022 and December 2023. The company would ask its dealers to install a physical fix in the recalled cars, the SAMR statement added.
Dolphin and Yuan Plus were BYD’s two top-selling models in 2023. In total they accounted for 26 per cent of the 3 million BYDs sold in the year. This is according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
The recall is a rare one by BYD which is one of the world’s biggest sellers of electric vehicles.
The BYD Dolphin launched in Malaysia in July 2023. The Yuan Plus is the Atto 3 SUV in Malaysia. The Atto 3 was the first BYD vehicle in launch in Malaysia in December 2022.
