McLaren Artura Spider, first-ever hybrid convertible from McLaren
McLaren Artura Spider is now available in Malaysia from RM3.4 million inclusive of tax, before options. McLaren’s entry-level convertible is the first-ever hybrid convertible from the British supercar manufacturer. The Artura Spider joins the Artura Coupé which launched in 2022.
The performance figures for the convertible and coupé are similar. It does zero to 100km/h in 3 seconds to a top speed of 330km/h. The 3.0-litre V6 and E-motor have a combined output of 690bhp (700PS) and overall 720Nm of torque with the E-motor providing up to 225Nm of torque. The petrol engine output is more than 197bhp (200PS) per litre. Artura Spider is the lightest convertible supercar in its class with power-to-weight ratio of 480PS/tonne. The Artura Spider is also the most fuel-efficient McLaren convertible ever at 108g/km CO2 and 4.8l/100km in combined EU WLTP. The EV range for both the Artura coupé and Artura Spider has increased to 33km. The gearbox is an eight-speed dual-clutch with reverse via the E-motor. The Artura Spider is rear-wheel drive.
McLaren’s high-performance hybrid powertrain has an additional 20PS compared to the MY25 Artura, increasing overall power to 700PS. The additional power is from 4,000rpm to the redline at 8,500rpm, for a marked ‘crescendo’ in performance. Peak torque value remains at a muscular 720Nm, its delivery optimised by minor changes to electronic mapping. Engine recalibration is available free-of-charge to existing Artura owners** via their McLaren Retailer. ** available according to individual market homologation requirements
Five lithium-ion modules with a combined capacity of 7.4kWh power the E-motor Charging time using an EVSE cable is 2.5 hours to 80 per cent. The battery is 88kg while the E-motor is 15.4kg adding a combined 130kg overall additional kilos to the Spider. The battery is cooled by refrigerant. There is also a power distribution unit which transfers battery power from the rear of the vehicle to the ancillaries in the front. The entire assembly, comprising the battery and power distribution unit, is mounted on a structural carbon fibre floor and bolted on to the rear base of the monocoque to optimise stiffness, weight distribution and crash protection.
The Artura Spider, and Artura, are built around ther McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) which retains body rigidity even though there’s no roof. The Spider has a kerb weight of 1560kg, 62kg more than the coupé. This makes the Spider the lightest convertible in its class by up to 83kg. Most of the additional 62kg is from the electrically-operated Retractable Hard Top (RHT) and mechanism. There is also aluminium impact structures and a rear struction that houses the hybrid power train. An ethernet electrical architecture, specially developed for the Artura Spider, is also part of MCLA, reducing cabling by 25% and with that proportional weight. The electrical architecture was also optimised to increase data capacity and transfer speeds.
The Artura Spider has independent adaptive dampers in front. At the rear, a top upper wishbone with two lower links and a tie rod in front of the wheel centre, maximises vehicle stability and precision. They reduce understeer out of a corner while accelerating. McLaren’s Proactive Damping Control system is supplied by Official Intelligent Suspension Partner, Monroe. Drives modes are Comfort, Sport and Track. There is also a Launch Control and new “Spinning Wheel Pull-Away” feature. To active Spinning Wheel disengage Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and accelerate heavily from standstill.
There are three Pirelli tyres
- P-Zero – standard
- P-Zero Corsa – option
- P-Zero Winter tyres with Pirelli CyberTyre technology – option.
The MY25 Artura has a new 15-spoke wheel as standard, in silver finish. A new gold-coloured Orum wheel finish is available on both Dynamo and Star wheel designs. There are now also Calibre 10-Spoke Super-Lightweight wheels, finished in Silver, Dark Stealth or Gloss Black. As an option, there are also Titanium Wheel Bolts which give a saving of approximately 0.4kg.
The brakes are Carbon Ceramic Discs 390mm in front, 380mm at the rear. The forged aluminium brake calipers are six-piston front monobloc, four-piston rear.
Eight separate motors power the Spider retractable hard-top roof which takes 11 seconds to open at speeds up to 50km/h. There is a electrochromic option for the glass, to change from clear to opaque at the touch of a button.
Safety features include blindspot monitoring, cross-traffic detection, road sign recognition and lane departure warning as standard.
There is a standard interior spec but there are now three more to chose from:
- Performance – more sporty style
- TechLux – technical luxury
- Vision – avante-garde and adventurous
The exterior colour range now has five standard colours, 20 Elite colours and 18 MSO colours.
Every new Artura comes as standard with a five-year, unlimited mileage vehicle warranty; a six-year, 75,000km/45,000mile battery warranty and a ten-year anti-perforation body warranty. The warranty is extendable. There is also a three-year service plan and five-year roadside assistance package included.
