Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors has launched the Ioniq Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The two trim levels, the HEV and the HEV Plus, have a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with a 42kW electric motor that is powered by a 32kW Lithium-ion Polymer battery. The combined maximum output from the system is 139bhp and 265Nm of torque. The Ioniq has a six speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The Ioniq Ioniq Hybrid Electric Vehicle is Hyundai’s first hybrid. There are two other models not currently offered in Malaysia, the Ionic Plug-in Hybrid and all-electric Ionic Electric. The Ionic is smaller than the Elantra, although they have the same size wheelbase. The mid-size saloon competes in the category as the Toyota Prius. Like the Prius, it uses a combination of electric power at low speeds and petrol and electric at higher speeds. It is capable of travelling at up to 120km/h on fully electric mode.
The batteries are located under the rear passenger seats so there is no loss in boot volume which is 750 litres.
Equipment-wise, the HEV and HEV Plus come with 17” rims, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors with reverse camera, tyre pressure monitoring systems, smart key, keyless entry with push-button ignition, dual-zone airconditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and multifunction steering wheel.
The differences in the HEV-spec are halogen headlights, bulb-type rear lamps, five-inch LCD monitor for the infotainment system, manually-adjusted fabric seats and passive cruise control. The HEV Plus is specced with Bi-Xenon headlights and LED positioning lamps, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, leather upholstery with eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat, seven-inch infotainment monitor and Qi wireless charging system for smartphones.
Standard safety equipment in both are seven airbags, ABS, Brake Assist System, hill-start assist, ESC and VSM as standard. In additional, the HEV Plus has Blind Spot Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control.
At the launch of the Ioniq, HSDM also introduced the Care Plus Programme:
i) Five-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty of vehicle
ii) Eight years unlimited mileage warranty for the battery and a battery price below RM10,000 for the following 8 years should the battery needs replacement
iii) Three years or 60,000km (whichever comes first) of free service that includes parts, labour and engine oil

There are six colours for the HEV and HEV Plus: Phantom Black, Polar White, Platinum Silver, Aurora Silver, Iron Grey, Marina Blue and, exclusive to the HEV Plus, Phoenix Orange.
