Proton has officially launched the 2019 Proton Iriz hatchback and 2019 Proton Persona saloon. The external appearance has been updated to bring together the design of the models for a family-look in the form of the “Ethereal Bow” front grille and infinite weave pattern which first appeared on the X70 SUV.
Both cars get new front and rear bumpers and new alloy wheel designs – different for the two models. The Iriz gets a sporty black roof treatment which extends part-way down the rear while the Persona gets a new boot spoiler. Higher spec models get smart entry, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, sporty rear spoiler, remote trunk release, automatic folding electric door mirrors, and new shark fin antenna.
Inside, again depending on the variant, new features include push-button ignition, leather multifunction steering wheel including hands-free telephone control, 2 rear USB chargers, TFT instrument cluster meters with Eco Drive Assist, roof liner fabric, rear view mirror and sleeker gear knob.
The top-spec Iriz now has partial leather seats with two-tone, red and blue, strip on the fabric upholstery while the Persona gets textured ribbing on the back rests.
The Premium 1.6 CVT variant of both models now come with intelligent infotainment features first introduced in the X70 SUV, available through an embedded eSIM card which connects the car to the internet for streaming music, online navigation and voice recognition. It’s accessed via a seven-inch touchscreen featuring a full-colour display and 16GB of internal memory. In addition, the system mirrors functions from Android phones.
The voice recognition system is activated with the words, “Hey, Proton!”, enabling the user to access certain features using voice commands while keeping their eyes on the road. The system is updated Over The Air with apps updated or added as they become available.
Both cars have been five stars ASEAN NCAP rating for safety. This is due to the Hot Press Formed (HPF) body structure which increases the structural strength by up to five times. The top-of-the-range 1.6L Premium gets six airbags all around while the other models get two front airbags. Other safety features are Hill-Hold Assist, electronic stability control, traction control and a reverse camera with distance markings and all-round proximity sensors for easier parking.
Proton is also offering special packages in conjunction with the launch as follows:
