2026 Proton X90 now the lowest priced D-segment SUV in Malaysia
The 2026 Proton X90 has launched in Malaysia. Three spec levels are available, Lite, Prime and Prime X. Prices start from RM106,800 for the Lite, the Prime at RM116,800 while the Prime X is RM122,800. Prices are on-the-road without insurance.
Unlike the previous X90 launched in 2023, the 2026 X90 has undergone several cost-cutting measures in order to bring down the price substantially, most notably sacrificing Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features in all variants so that the 2026 top-spec Prime X now has almost the same specs as the 2023 Executive while being RM1000 less than the 2023 entry-level Standard.
The ADAS features consisted of:
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
- Blind Spot Technology (BST)
These features earned the Proton X90 an ASEAN NCAP 5-Star safety rating*
*Edit: On 15 March 2026, Miros (the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research announced on its Facebook page that the Proton X90 has been downgraded to an ASEAN NCAP safety rating of 1-Star
Safety features in the X90 now consist of
- Six airbags (front, side & curtain)
- ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Brake Assist (BA)
- Traction Control System (TCS)
- Hill Hold Assist (HHA)
- Hill Descent Control (HDC)
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) in Prime & Prime X
- Four rear parking sensors and reverse camera in the Lite
- Four rear sensors and two front parking sensors in the Prime & Prime X
- 360º HD camera with 180º transparent view in the Prime & Prime X
- Digital Video Recorder in the Prime X
Compared to the 2023-2025 Proton X90, the following features are also no longer in the 2026 X90:
- 48V mild hybrid battery system
- power tailgate
- auto start-stop
- navigation
- wireless charger
- 19-inch alloy rims, now 18-inch alloy rims across all variants
- paddleshifts
- auto park assist
Other changes are the addition of
- keyless entry
- utility roof rails that support up to 75kg
- wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
New for 2026 in the SUV is Proton’s i-GT 1.5-litre four cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which is also in the X50 and X70. The output is 181PS/ 178hp and 290Nm of torque, an increase in torque from 255Nm previously.
The headlights are full LED with LED daytime running lights, front sequential turn signals, LED front and rear foglights, electric door mirrors and Follow Me Home lights. Both Prime and Prime X have auto headlamps and rain sensing windscreen wipers which the base model Lite does not.
Across the three variants, there are three drive modes, Comfort, Eco and Sport and three steering modes, Normal, Comfort and Sport.
The infotainment monitor across the range is 12.3-inch with a 3.5-inch meter combination in the Lite and 10.3-inch meter combination in the Prime and Prime X.
The steering while material is leatherette. Lite and Prime are seven-seaters with leatherette upholstery. The driver’s seat in the Prime is six-way power adjustable. Meanwhile the six-seater Prime X has Nappa leather upholstery with six-way power adjustable driver’s seat and four-way power adjustable front passenger seat and Captain seats in the second row, all of which are ventilated. The front passenger seat in the Prime X has a “Boss” Switch. The luggage space in 275-litres with all the seats up. This expands to 1011-litres when the third row is folded flat and goes up to 2050-litres when the second and third rows are down.
There are five exterior colours all with black interiors:
- Quartz Black
- Marine Blue
- Armour Silver
- Snow White
- Jet Grey
In conjunction with the launch, Proton is offering a special launch package in addition to the Standard Ownership Package. The Standard Ownership Package consists of
- Pro-Warranty* – five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and five-year free labour service
- Pro-Finance* – financing options of up to nine years with interest rates starting from 1.95% per annum
- Pro-Xchange* – RM4,000 support for deregistration of non-roadworthy trade-in vehicles
The Special Launch Package includes
- a rebate of RM7,000
- Pro-Trade-In*, which provides overtrade support of up to RM3,000 for customers trading in their existing vehicles.
- the option for enhanced PROTON Insurance Programme, Pro-Shield*
– special perils protection
– flood relief coverage of up to RM2,000
– passenger personal accident coverage of up to RM15,000 per person for up to four passengers
The enhanced insurance coverage come on top of the existing insurance benefits such as betterment waiver up to 10 years, agreed-value protection, all-driver coverage, key replacement, personal accident coverage for policyholder, and 24-hour roadside assistance.
The special launch package is for the first 2000 customers who register their X90 before 30 June 2026.
