Honda Sensing introduced in fifth-generation Honda City, with hybrid RS e:HEV variant

Honda Malaysia has launched the fifth generation of the Honda City with the promise that it is the most advanced car in the B-segment. Four variants have been launched: three standard petrol S, E and V trim levels, and the top-of-the-range petrol-hybrid, RS e:HEV. Malaysia is the first country in the world to launch the all-new City RS e:HEV.

Honda has fitted the latest City with B-segment firsts, features more commonly found in C, D and SUV segments:

  • Remote Engine Start, allows driver to start their car while the doors are locked and to activate the air-conditioning to cool down the interior, available in all four variants
  • Honda LaneWatch, a camera-based advanced safety technology which helps monitor blind spots,  fitted in the V and RS e:HEV variants
  • Electric Parking Brake (EPB), in the RS e:HEV

The flagship City RS e:HEV will be offered with Honda SENSING with a front wide view camera that recognises road boundaries. The driver assistance safety systems in Honda SENSING are:

1. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
2. Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
3. Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
4. Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS)
5. Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)
6. Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
7. Auto High Beam (AHB)

Safety wise, the V and RS e:HEV variants are equipped with six airbags. Other standard safety features include:

  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
  • Brake Assist (BA)
  • Emergency Stop Signal (ESS)
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)
  • Rear Seat ISOFIX
  • Rear Seatbelt Reminder.

Reverse Sensors with Multi-angle Reverse Camera will be offered in E, V and RS e:HEV specs. The RS e:HEV will also be equipped with Auto Brake Hold (ABH) which holds the vehicle in position without the driver having to maintain their foot on the brake.

The fifth generation City is larger than the fourth generation City: longer by 111mm, wider by 54mm and lowered by 10mm in comparison. The rear passenger legroom has been increased and rear aircon vents are standard.

The City has a new 1500cc engine paired with CVT transmission. In the S, E and V variants the output is 119bhp and 145Nm of torque. The RS e:HEV has a two-motor hybrid system powered by intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) an intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) powertrain. The i-MMD powertrain delivers 106bhp and a best-in-class torque of 253Nm. When combined with electric Continuous Variable Transmission (e-CVT), acceleration is equivalent to the torque from a D-segment naturally-aspirated engine.

The i-MMD powertrain and Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) system regulates between the three driving modes, EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive. The RS e:HEV also comes with a Deceleration Selector Paddles that allow the driver to engage on the paddles for power regeneration as well as slowing down the vehicle without stepping on the brake pedal.

The RS e:HEV can be distinguished by new gloss black front grille, carbon-patterned front lip, rear bumper with diffuser, trunk spoiler and gloss black door mirrors.

LED Headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), LED fog lights as well as LED taillights and 16-inch alloy wheels are standard on the V and RS e:HEV.

The RS e:HEV has seven-inch interactive Thin Film Transistor (TFT) meter cluster, sport pedal pads and Ultrasuede seats with red stitching. Meanwhile the V spec comes with leather upholstery with ivory highlights. The E, V and RS e:HEV variants are available with an eight-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Connectivity.
