The sixth-generation 7 Series long-wheelbase saloon facelift increases in length and sees upgrades in technology
Two new flagship BMW models were launched together in Malaysia, the updated 7 Series saloon and the first-ever X7 SUV .
The BMW 740Le xDrive is an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder 286bhp petrol engine’s performance is boosted by a 113bhp electric motor with a maximum combined output of 394bhp. It has an all-electric range of 46 kilometres and all-electric top speed of 140km/h. Zero-to-hundred is in 5.1 seconds while its fuel consumption is 35.7km/L.
Fuel-conserving features include satellite-guided the eight-speed automatic transmission, through the navigation system, working in tandem with the cameras and radar to maximise the efficiency of the start/stop system and coasting function. The electric motor is also integrated into the gearbox to ensure that the pure-electric driving, electric boost and recuperative braking energy are efficiently managed.
The new 7’s driver assistance system, BMW Personal CoPilot has been upgraded and is now capable of detecting both pedestrians and cyclists. Other additional features are Evasion Aid, Crossroads Warning with City Brake Activation, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Parking Assistant and Reversing Assistant. The BMW Digital Key is also available for selected Android mobile devices to make access to the luxury saloon more convenient.
The BMW 740Le xDrive is offered in Pure Excellence trim. The length has increased by 23mm as a result of modifications to the front and rear bodykit. The extended wheelbase is 3210mm. Exterior updates include a larger front grille and 13mm larger BMW emblem. Fog lights are no longer integrated into the front apron which has a new design: large air guides that run across the outer air outlets to channel air directly to the brakes and the air curtain. There are new slim and elongated laser headlights. There are also new LED tail lights, 35mm slimmer with a 6mm-wide light strip connecting the two lamps. Below, the chrome tailpipe finishers are now wider.
The air breathers just behind the front wheel arches are almost vertical with incoming air directed to the new 19-inch light alloys with double-spoke style 630 Bicolour with mixed tyres.
Standard interior equipment include a leather-covered sports steering wheel, Poplar Grain Grey wood trim, Alcantara headliner and Nappa Leather upholstery, automatic four-zone control air-conditioning, roller sunblinds. Rear passenger seats are electrically adjustable with massage function. The rear seats are also fitted with Entertainment Experience with music enjoyed via the 16-Speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound System.
The standard infotainment system offered is the new BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Operating System 7.0, fully digital, freely configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a central 10.25-inch touchscreen Control Display.
Drivers have five input methods to control vehicle functions: the steering wheel buttons, iDrive Controller, Touch Display, Voice Control and the Gesture Control. With the integration of navigation to the Info Display in front of the driver, the central Control Display now shows infotainment and advanced vehicle functions. The innovative Gesture Control has been updated to register individual finger movements and can distinguish up to seven hand movements. The 7 Series also has Connected Package Professional, which offers services such as Remote Services, Concierge Services, Apple CarPlay and Intelligent Functions.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is fitted as standard in the infotainment set-up. It is a voice-activated digital personal assistant that is woken with a personalised activation word that delivers information about the functions and status of the BMW and provide support for navigation and entertainment. It can also be used to control the new Caring Car functions, which includes the Vitalize and Relax programmes, to automatically activate vehicle functions such as air conditioning, lighting, seat massage and music, designed to revitalise or relax the driver. Two Experience Modes are also available to adapt the interior ambience to the driver’s mood, namely the Executive and the Expressive modes.
