Malaysia VEP information office now open in Singapore

Malaysia VEP information office located in Woodlands opened quietly on 19 August

Malaysia VEP (Vehicle Entry Permit) starts on 1 October 2024. All foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore must have the VEP RFID tag fitted by then. The Malaysia Road Transport Department (JPJ) has set up an office at #03-01R, 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5 for Singapore car owners to get information on applying for the permit.

Earlier this month, the Malaysia Minister for Transport, Anthony Loke announced that an information centre would open in Woodlands for Singapore drivers to make enquiries without having to go to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Johor Bahru. A Singapore firm would operate the centre in collaboration with TCSens, he said.

However, there was no public announcement on the location by TCSens, the company contracted by JPJ to manage Singaporean driver inquiries about the VEP. Word quickly spread amongst Singaporeans that the office had opened and its location after someone went to TCSens’ Johor Bahru office to make enquies about the Singapore office. They were only given an address without the unit number for the office.

The Woodlands VEP office is strictly a face-to-face enquiry centre. The staff provide guidance on the requirements to apply for the VEP and try to resolve any issues drivers may have encountered applying for the VEP online. Drivers will not be able to install or collect their VEP RFID (radio frequency identification) tags at the office.

In 2015, Malaysia announced that all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia by land from Singapore had to have a VEP. This covers all categories – private and commercial vehicles as well as motorbikes. However, there was a delay in implementation to allow for improvements in the RFID tag installation process. In May of this year, Anthony Loke announced that the VEP tag requirement would commence on 1 October.

Vehicles have to register and have an RFID tag fitted that costs RM10. The RFID tag is unique to the vehicle and is non-transferable.

After 1 October, any foreign-registered motor vehicle entering from Singapore must have a VEP tag. Drivers of vehicles without a VEP tag can be fined up to RM2000 or jailed for up to six months.

Currently, there is a RM20 fee for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia via the Woodlands Causeway and Tuas Second Link. Motorcyclists do not pay the levy.

The Malaysia VEP office is located at 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5,  #03-01R under the name MY VEP Pte Ltd. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. There are only 100 queue numbers a day.
