BMW X & M night in M Town, M8 launched

BMW Malaysia launches four cars at M Town, M8, M8 Gran Coupé, X4M Competition and X3M Competition

BMW Malaysia launched four BMW M models at one event: the BMW M8 and M8 Gran Coupé and the BMW X4M and X3M. All four are are “first-evers”, the first-time ever the respective models have been launched as M performance models. They’re all also four-wheel drives.

BMW M8
The two-door BMW M8 and four-door M8 Gran Coupé share an engine in common, a 4.4-litre V8 with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Gear changes are sequential via an M8-specific gear selector in S mode, or manually via paddles on the steering wheel. There are three different Drivelogic modes allowing the driver to customise how the gears shift. The output is 600bhp and 750Nm of torque.

The traction and stability of the M xDrive all-wheel drive system in the M8 is rear-wheel bias by default but there are several settings including fully variable torque split. The power distribution also fully customisable according to driver preference from the default 4WD setting to 4WD Sport mode to rear-wheel drive only for track. The Active M differential handles power distribution between the rear wheel for optimal traction and directional stability.

The dynamic set ups for engine, suspension and steering responsiveness are configurable.

The M8s – with a maximum output of 600bhp and 750Nm of torque – have an M-specific integrated brake system: brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions in one module. Both models have lighter M Compound brakes with blue calipers as standard.

The two M8 models share the same front end, a new M-specific front apron, along with the BMW kidney grille featuring M-specific decorative mesh, double slats and M8 designation, slender BMW Laserlights with high-beam assistant.

The side mirrors are the signature M twin-stalk design, frameless side windows and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line adorn either side of the vehicles. The flared aluminium wings with M gills and M8 designation emphasise track width and wheel size. At the rear, both have the M rear spoiler, as well as M-specific M8 rear diffuser and M-specific exhaust system with twin tailpipes and chrome trims. The driver can adjust the exhaust sounds the car makes through the Sound Control button.

The M8 Coupé and Grand Coupé also have soft-closing doors, a carbon roof made of self-coloured carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Double-spoke style 810 M Bicolour with mixed tyres and automatic tailgate operation.

The leather clad cabin has M-specific features emblazoned with M where possible: multi-adjustable seats with memory, door sills, gearshift lever knob, M seat belts and 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system with 464-watt amplifier power. The moulded rear seats are clad in merino leather. The M8 Coupé has 420 litres of luggage space, the M8 Gran Coupé 440 litres.

Infotainment is through the BMW Live Cockpit Professional on BMW Operating System 7.0. There’s an all-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a high-resolution 10.25-inch Control Display and a full-colour Head-Up Display with additional M-specific displays. Standard features are BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control system, direct menu control buttons, iDrive Touch Controller with its rotary/push button, the touchscreen Control Display or the Gesture Control system.
