Third generation Mini has been facelifted with styling, safety and efficiency enhancements
Mini Malaysia has launched three updated variants from the Mini range: the 3-door Mini Cooper S hatchback, the Mini Cooper S 5-door and the performance-oriented Mini John Cooper Works.
Mini 3- and 5-Door
Both the 3- and 5-door Minis are powered by a new 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine. The output -192bhp and 280Nm of torque – is still the same but the engine cover is now made of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) which is 13% lighter and the engine innards have been updated, reducing the overall weight by eight kilogrammes.
The new-design gear lever shifts the new seven-speed dual, wet clutch gearbox that replaces the six-speed auto. The 3-door scoots from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, the 5-door does it in 6.8 seconds. Top speed for both models is 235km/h. Coasting, previously only available in Green mode, is now available in both Green and Mid mode, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and providing a claimed 8% improvement on fuel efficiency.
There are new brighter Bi-LED headlights with daytime running lights, LED indicator lamps, new Union Jack-patterned taillamps and body trimmings on the exterior. Inside, the ambient lighting forms a display in the pattern of a stylised Union Jack on the dashboard, set or running through a choice of 12 colours. A rear view camera has also been added.
Both new Minis now have high-resolution 6.5”touchscreen displays with navigation which can be operated via the Mini Controller or touchscreen. There is also a Mini Connected App which enables owners to integrate their smart phone, smart phone apps and also check fuel consumption, fuel range and last known location on their phones.
The new Mini 3-Door is fitted with Leather Cross Punch seats in Carbon Black and is shod with 17-inch Cosmos Spoke rims in black and comes in seven colours – Chili Red, Pepper White, Solaris Orange, White Silver, Starlight Blue, Thunder Grey and British Racing Green paired with Black Roof. Alternatively, Chili Red can also be paired with White Roof.
Meanwhile, the new Mini 5-Door has Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black seats and a Black Chequered interior. It has high gloss 17” John Cooper Works wheels, Track Spoke in Black; John Cooper Works Aerodynamic Kit which includes a rear spoiler. There are six exterior paint colours: Chili Red, Pepper White, Emerald Grey, White Silver, Starlight Blue and British Racing Green paired with Black Roof. Chili Red can also be paired with White Roof.
Mini John Cooper Works
The Mini JCW is powered by a more powerful 2.0-litre twin scroll turbocharged engine that produces 231bhp and 320Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and shifted manually through paddles by the steering wheel. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 6.1 seconds, the top speed 246km/h. Adaptive suspension is standard
Like the 3- and 5-door Minis, the JCW has Mini Logo Projection, LED Headlights and Taillights. Distinctive JCW features include new Piano Black exterior trim, 18” John Cooper Works Cup Spoke 2-Tone and John Cooper Works Bonnet Stripes and optional Panoramic Sunroof.
The JCW has Dinamica Leather John Cooper Works Racing Seats, accentuated by Chili Red colour lines, an anthracite headliner, and stainless-steel pedals. The cockpit facia of the New MINI John Cooper Works can now be customised according to the owner’s preference.
The 8.8” touchscreen monitor has Navigation and Natural Language Recognition. The Natural Language Recognition feature recognises sentences in different variations and understands a wide range of abbreviations and even pauses, enabling easier control through voice commands. There is also Head Up Display.
A first in its segment in the Mini JCW is the provision of Wireless Charging for mobile phones. The wireless charging station is located in the centre armrest. An additional feature is Mini Find Mate, tags with wireless tracking function that owners can attach to important belongings, such as bags, cases and key rings. Once these items are out of range, owners will receive a notification from the Mini Connected app, showing the last known location of the tagged item.
The New Mini John Cooper Works is four exterior colour options: Rebel Green, Midnight Black and Pepper White with Red Roof, and Chili Red with Black Roof.
The estimated on-the-road prices for the new Mini are as follows: Cooper S 3 Door: RM 226,888.00, Cooper S 5 Door: RM 236,888.00 and John Cooper Works Hatch: RM 283,888.00. Prices are without insurance and include 4 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service.
